Several decades ago, our beloved spiritual teacher, Sera Mey Ari Khensur Lobsang Tharchin Rinpoche (1921-2004), who had been a monk at the original Sera Mey College located several miles outside Lhasa, Tibet, began a project that eventually came to be known as the Sera Mey Monks Scholastic Food Fund. Now administered by a Food Fund Committee at Sera Mey College in Bylakuppe, India, all the resident monks are provided a complete diet of nutritious food on a daily basis.
Sera Mey College was re-established in south India in the early 1970s with the help of the Indian Government by a group of about one hundred Tibetan refugee monks from the college of the same name in Tibet who fled their homeland in 1959 following the Chinese invasion and occupation. The original Sera Mey College formed part of the venerable Sera Monastery, founded in 1419 by Jamchen Choje Sakya Yeshe, a direct disciple of the great Lama Tsongkapa Losang Drakpa, the originator of the Gelukpa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. There are now over seventeen hundred monks in residence at Sera Mey College in south India.
The goal of the Food Fund is to provide daily nutrition to all the monks of Sera Mey College so that they can maintain good health as they pursue their rigorous program of study of the five great Indian Buddhist treatises that form the basis of their educational curriculum. These texts are (1) Maitreya's Jewel Ornament of Realization, (2) Dharmakirti's Treatise on Valid Cognition, (3) Chandrakirti's Embarking on the Middle Way, (4) Vasubandhu's Treasury of Higher Knowledge, and (5) Gunaprabha's Sutra on Monastic Discipline.
The Mahayana Sutra and Tantra Center of New Jersey, which was also established by Sera Mey Khensur Lobsang Tharchin Rinpoche in Howell, New Jersey, continues to provide financial support to the Sera Mey Monks Scholastic Food Fund. In this capacity, MSTC of New Jersey humbly requests contributions from anyone who would like to help maintain this worthy endeavor. We gratefully thank you for your donation, which furthers our former teacher's wish to preserve the Buddhist monastic teaching system at Sera Mey College. Every year, Sera Mey graduates qualified masters of the Buddhist teaching who help to ensure that the Buddha's holy Dharma will continue to flourish in the world.
